Test on the water repellency and durability of outdoor fabrics, focusing on the issue of performance degradation after multiple washes

Many customers have reported that outdoor products lose their waterproof effect after being used a few times and washed, leading to a large number of after-sales disputes. The root cause lies in the different waterproof processes and finishing auxiliaries of the fabrics. This time, we will conduct practical experience exchanges focusing on the durability of waterproofing and the attenuation after washing.

Different Processes' Water Washing Decay Rates: Surface Coated Waterproof Fabric: After 3-5 washes, the surface waterproof coating gradually detaches, allowing water droplets to penetrate directly into the fabric, resulting in the fastest decay rate. It is not suitable for clothing that can be repeatedly washed. PU Composite Waterproof Fabric: Relying on the inner waterproof membrane, it only slowly decays after more than 10 washes. After the loss of surface hydrophobic additives, it will only prevent water droplets from adhering, but will not leak directly, providing greater durability. DWR Spray-On Fabric (Specialized for High-End Rain Jackets): Utilizing hydrophobic additives to achieve a lotus-like water repellent effect, the water repellent effect noticeably decreases after 5 washes. However, with low-temperature ironing, some water repellent performance can be restored.

Key factors affecting the accelerated attenuation of waterproofing: Washing methods: Hot water washing, alkaline laundry detergent, and strong spinning can quickly damage the waterproof coating and hydrophobic additives; Environmental wear and tear: Long-term exposure to sunlight, friction from sediment, and adhesion of oil stains can corrode the waterproof layer of the fabric. The waterproof lifespan of outdoor tents stored in the open air for a long time will be reduced by half; Fabric density: Low-density thin fabrics have large gaps, poor adhesion of the waterproof coating, and decay faster than high-density lining fabrics and thickened oxford fabrics.

The processing plan to improve durability involves adding a dual waterproof finishing process to the fabric before leaving the factory, which includes coating followed by spraying with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) hydrophobic agent. For washable outdoor clothing, the PU moisture-permeable composite process is selected. The product manual indicates gentle cold water washing and prohibits high-temperature drying, reducing after-sales issues caused by improper use by customers.
